Korean GPA to 4.0 scale
Convert a GPA proportionally between 4.5, 4.3 and 4.0 scales. Check the receiving institution’s conversion requirements before submitting a result.
3.38
Out of 4.3 3.63
Out of 4.0 3.38
Percentage 84.4%
This is the proportional conversion — your GPA as a share of the maximum. Regrading each course can give a different result. Follow the receiving institution’s instructions when submitting your GPA

Grade points for each letter grade
| Grade | 4.5 scale | 4.0 comparison scale |
|---|---|---|
| A+ | 4.5 | 4.0 |
| A0 | 4.0 | 4.0 |
| B+ | 3.5 | 3.3 |
| B0 | 3.0 | 3.0 |
| C+ | 2.5 | 2.3 |
| C0 | 2.0 | 2.0 |
| D+ | 1.5 | 1.3 |
| D0 | 1.0 | 1.0 |
| F | 0.0 | 0.0 |
The 4.5 scale shown uses plus and zero grades: A+, A0, B+ and B0. It does not use minus grades. The 4.0 column is a comparison scale; institutions may use other grade tables.
How the 4.5 scale is arranged
A transcript showing 3.8 / 4.5 uses a different maximum from a 4.0 scale. Compare the maximum as well as the GPA.
On the 4.5 scale, A+ is worth 4.5 and A0 is worth 4.0. The higher maximum changes a GPA’s proportional value on another scale.
The 4.5 scale shown has no A-minus. It uses A+, A0 and B+, while the 4.0 comparison scale uses A, A- and B+. Fewer steps, wider gaps — one grade moves your average more than it would in a system with minuses.
So 3.80 out of 4.5 is 3.38 out of 4.0, or 84.4% of the maximum. Use it only if the receiving institution requests proportional conversion.
Two ways to convert, and they disagree
Proportional is what this page does: divide by 4.5, multiply by 4.0. This preserves the GPA as a share of the maximum.
Regrading is the other way: take each course, map its letter onto the American scale, and average again. An A+ becomes 4.0 instead of 4.5, a B+ becomes 3.3 instead of 3.5.
The difference depends on the course grades. Proportional conversion rescales the final average; regrading applies another grade table to each course before averaging. These methods need not produce the same result.
Use the method the receiving university requests.
What GPA to enter on an application
If the form has separate boxes for GPA and maximum, enter both as printed. For example, enter 3.8 as the GPA and 4.5 as the maximum.
Use the conversion method requested by the institution. A single input box does not by itself tell you whether to use proportional conversion or regrade individual courses.
If a credential service like WES is evaluating your transcript, they use their own table and their evaluation determines the converted GPA. Anything you calculate here is for your own planning.
GPA scale and included courses on your transcript
Check the maximum before anything else. Most Korean universities use 4.5, but some use 4.3 with minus grades. The number is printed on the transcript, usually next to the GPA.
Pass/fail courses are excluded. They count toward credits earned but not toward the average, so the credit total and the graded total are different numbers.
A retaken course may show twice. Korean universities differ on whether the old grade stays visible and whether it still counts. If both appear, the transcript legend explains which one entered the average.
Other calculators explain apartment size and Korean age.
Common questions
What is 3.8 out of 4.5 on a 4.0 scale?
3.38 out of 4.0, which is 84.4% of the maximum. Regrading each course can give a different result; the difference depends on the course grades.
Why do Korean universities grade out of 4.5?
On the 4.5 scale shown, A+ is worth 4.5 and A0 is worth 4.0, with no minus grades. Other Korean universities use different scales, including 4.3 with minus grades. Check the maximum and grade table on your transcript.
Is a 4.5 GPA the same as a 4.0 GPA?
Yes — both are perfect scores on their own scale. A 4.5 out of 4.5 means every grade was A+, so it is the equivalent of a 4.0 out of 4.0.
Should I convert my GPA on an application?
Follow the application instructions. If GPA and maximum have separate boxes, enter the printed values, such as 3.8 and 4.5. If conversion is required, use the method specified by the institution.
How do I turn my Korean GPA into a percentage?
Divide by the maximum and multiply by 100. A 3.80 out of 4.5 is 84.4%. Institutions that require a percentage often publish their own table, which takes priority.
What scale does my university use?
It is printed on the transcript. Korean universities use scales such as 4.5 and 4.3 with minus grades. This page handles 4.5, 4.3, 4.0.
